Why are we obsessed with materialistic things?

Over the past couple of months I have become ever increasingly aware that people don't feel complete without the newest something, whether it is the new iphone 5 or the new season dress. I can not say that I am not guilty of this myself, but who can blame me? We are constantly bombarded with advertisements that these are the things we need or that our life won't be complete without it. We are also constant influenced by our friends and family that because they look good or feel better than we do that we also need this thing to be happy. We are willing to waste thousands of pounds a year for what? So that we can feel good about ourselves for a moment but then have to buy something just as meaning less to feel the void we need to 'belong'. So I challenge you my readers for this month not to impulse buy or get anything unless it will be an absolute asset to your life. I am not saying this will be easy or even achievable but I am going to try myself to fill the void with the little thing and not the things that will make you feel 'cool' or 'accepted'. Just be you because you are amazing!

Photo shopping gone too far

It seems now that you can't walk down the street without seeing a photo shopped image, and it personally disgusts me that people have now come to expect this as the social norm. It mostly effected me by seeing unrealistic expectations of women in magazines that are aimed at insecure teenagers, as I myself was affected by this and it made me question whether I was good enough and it annoyed and upset me that I didn't look like these amazing 'goddess' like women. I now realise that my aspirations were mislead, because these women are not real and I know if I met them in real life they wouldn't look the way they do in magazines.

Even if this post only helps one person see the truth in these fake images, maybe that one person can spread the message. The fact that extreme photo shopping has gone on for nearly 10 years now still manages to shock and sickens me, and makes me genuinely worried for the future of young girls. Children are being taught from a young age what to look like and what range of ideologies they should aspire to from magazines such as 'Sugar', that teach young girls the only things that are important are boys and fashion and not how to build a successful career.

 

One of the most shocking forms of photo shopping that I have seen was a Ralph Lauren front cover, which was later discovered that her body would not be scientifically possible (the picture linked above). Its images like these which causes young girls to become body dimorphic and causes them to develop life threatening illnesses like anorexia and bulimia. In just one magazine I would love to see someone influential on the cover, someone who has achieved something rather than just some celebrity who has won another award for a secondary role in a film.

Miley Cyrus- Adore you Review

Adore you is Miley's first song in her new album Bangerz. I thought that this was a beautiful and calming love song and perfect for Valentines day, this was until I saw her music video... I know she is trying to move away from her Hannah Montana child image, but I feel she ruined this song with this video. Unlike her previous songs like 'We can't stop' or 'Wrecking ball' which I feel were only enhanced by the videos in my opinion.

 

Most of the decisions Miley has made into the transition into adulthood have been all about the shock factor, which so far has been quite successful for example no one could stop talking about her shocking VMA performance with Robin Thicke. I am not saying I agree with all her decisions, like her twerking against Robin Thicke who is 40 years old and wrote a song about rape being acceptable. However I think it is unquestionably the best decision she made to cut her hair short and being so confident to pull it off.

 

Overall I'm really looking forward to Miley's new upcoming album, I also think that it fits in really well with her latest line of albums. I think Miley decisions about her new image have so far been quite smart and obviously thought out about the bigger picture. Although I was really disappointed with this video because she could have made it better, as I think she was only trying to shock with this video when she could have done so much more with it.

20 facts about me

1. My full name is Sophie Ellis Hobbs as my parents thought I was going to be a boy, and they were going to call me Ellis after a field they saw in Winchester.

2. I'm 5'10 which means I'm really tall and it doesn't help that my best friend is only 5'4 because it is a really obvious comparison between tall and short.

3. I have a stigmatism in my left eye which was passed down to me from my grandma. This also means that I have to wear glasses with really thick glass until I can afford laser eye surgery, (This also meant that I looked like Harry Potter for 4 years)

4. When I was 4 years old I fell over in Somerfield (supermarket) and nearly broke my chin, so I now have a scar for life.

5. I have an older sister called Elouise, she is nearly 20 years old, but despite the age difference we are so close and she is my best friend. She goes to Cardiff university which is 2 hours away from where I live so thank goodness for the invention of Skype.

6. I hate it when people don't use proper English when sending me texts or messaging me on social networking sites it sounds a bit fussy but it really annoys me.

7. My favourite genre of film is comedy but not silly or disgusting comedy (like the kind displayed in pitch perfect), because it seems cheap to me and a visual short cut for the audience. I much prefer witty comedy with people like Russell Brand or Jonah Hill who are both in 'Get him to the Greek' which is an amazing film and they both work so well together.

8. When I grow up I would love to be a teacher, I have wanted to be a teacher since I was about 7 years old. I love children and I think they are hilarious, and I am currently at work placement at my local primary school.

9. I think I am a really socially awkward person to meet and I will probably end up hugging you, however I have made some really amazing friendships through my 'forward' approach to people.

10. I have an unhealthy obsession with the television shows 'The big bang theory' and '2 broke girls' (mainly because it includes Kat Dennings), which in the UK are shown on E4. On one occasion I missed a series of '2 broke girls' so I spent the whole evening watching it.

11. I have a very grumpy cat called Mimzy (named after the film 'The last Mimzy') and a very loving dog called Alfie. They keep me company when I am home alone, but I am very much a dog person (sorry Mimzy ;) ) and I love taking Alfie for walks on the weekends.

12. My birthday is on the 9th of August and I am going to be 17 this year! However this usually means I am the youngest which can be annoying, and my star sign is a Leo. 

13. I have a part time job at Debenhams which is basically just a huge retail store, and I work in the fragrance department. Its not the job I plan to keep forever, but its nice to have for the moment.

14. I'm afraid of the dark (but who isn't), and in my psychology class we found out that a fear of the dark is a subconscious fear of the 'unknown', and when I think about it its not really the dark I am afraid of but a fear of what might be in the dark.

15. I always wanted to be able to play an instrument but whenever it got hard I quit, unlike my sister who is very advanced in playing the violin, and used to play in concerts all the time which were always fun.

16. My favourite season is autumn or spring because they are 'in-between' months and it is never too hot or too cold, although in England its most likely to be raining. I think these are my favourite seasons because I'm quite a fence sitter myself.

17. My favourite makeup brand is Benefit cosmetics, although it can be a bit expensive. Makeup is very interesting to me and I like experimenting with new looks, but I don't wear it everyday because I don't think it is necessary and I think that people should feel confident enough not to have to wear makeup.

18. I love baking and my favourite things to make are definitely desserts. They don't always turn out right but the are always extremely tasty.

19. I have a passion for English literature. I find it really interesting and I love reading books and exploring new authors. My other favourite part of literature is poetry especially war and love poetry.

20. My favourite drinks are herbal teas such as twinning's strawberry and mango or hot chocolate such as Wittards white hot chocolate, and always in my favourite spongebob mug.
